What Is an Oxygen Sensor?

An oxygen sensor measures the concentration of oxygen (O₂) in a gas mixture, or the partial pressure of oxygen in a process stream. Two sensing technologies are used across medical and industrial equipment: ultrasonic and limiting current (zirconia).

Ultrasonic Oxygen Sensing

Ultrasonic sensors derive the oxygen concentration from the speed of sound travelling through the gas mixture, because sound velocity depends on gas composition. There is no consumable sensing element and no chemical reaction involved.

Limiting Current (Zirconia) Oxygen Sensing

Limiting current sensors use a zirconia solid-electrolyte cell held at high temperature. Oxygen pumped through a diffusion barrier produces a current that saturates at the limiting value, which is approximately linear with the oxygen concentration of the measured gas.
